Jeff Belden, an Occupational
Therapist working in pediatrics, noticed an alarming trend in the
elementary classrooms. Reflexes that are normally integrated by the
time a child starts Kindergarten are still very much apparent. These
are the reflexes that are normally integrated as an active child
grows. In a child that has developmental difficulties, these reflexes
can hinder their growth and abilities to function.
Jeff starting looking at what
environments today’s child is growing up in. He noticed that
children today have far more opportunities for technological stimulus
than children from 20 or even just 10 years ago. Today, children are
likely to be inside on a computer or playing video games. Where as
children from just 15 to 20 years ago would be out riding their bikes,
climbing trees, playing a pick up game of ball, play in the backyard
‘til the street lights came on. The world is not as safe anymore
to let a child have free reign outside. Children are not getting as
much physical stimuli as physical education and recess times are cut
short to make time for more learning to keep up with state
standards.
In making these observations, Jeff started thinking
outside the box and came up with Yogari™. Yogari™ was created using
various postures from yoga and techniques used in reflex integration -
kind of a East meets West theory. In coming up with these postures, he
developed a book that incorporates each posture into a story that
captivates and involves the children, ‘The Amazing
Dream’.
